It's a cliche that they can land a man on the Moon but they can't even find a cure for the common cold. But things are a little bit more complicated than you may think. There are two types of microbes that can cause infection in us human beings: bacteria and viruses. Now imagine you could blow your average bacteria up to the size of a whale. How big do you think, let's say, a cold virus would be in proportion? The answer is a mouse! In other words while we can attack a bacterial infection with a whole arsenal of chemical weapons your average virus is simply too small and what's more, too clever to be affected by such crude devices. Talk about being clever! The method the common cold virus uses to ruin your day is positively fiendish. Like a group of bank robbers the viruses first break into your cell wall and go straight for the valuables, namely your genetic material. Next, they actually use your genetic material to produce millions of replicas of themselves and on their way out manage to create chaos by rupturing the cell itself. These nasty little critters then go on to infect other cells.
The symptoms of the common cold are actually your body's way of trying to defend itself. By sneezing and producing mucus, your body is trying to get rid of the virus. A raised temperature is usually a sign that the battle is nearly over and your body's defenses are rallying to the cause.
And here's an old remedy, which has proved it's worth over time: chicken soup. The Common Cold © 2008 ReallyFitNow.com - All rights reserved Health & Fitness Cures Remedies Advice
